Atlantic grey seals have bred along Cornwall's northern coast for at least four centuries, their colonies anchored to inaccessible rock shelves between Trevose Head and Godrevy Point. By the early twentieth century, hunting and disturbance had reduced the breeding population to fewer than thirty animals. Legal protection in 1970 reversed the decline.
